Both parents and students should realize that performances and extra rehearsals are a required part of the course work. This includes in-school field trips and after school activities. Unlike regular class work and written examinations, there is no way to make up a missed performance. Students depend upon their classmates to perform with them, and the audience exists at only one point in time.
The following reasons for absences may be:
- Health problems severe enough to keep the student at home, or the request from a doctor that the student not participate for a valid medical reason.
- Death in the family
- Religious observance
- Extreme emergencies/circumstances – accepted at the discretion of the director
Any absence not covered under Excused Absence (or situations deemed by the Directors) will be considered an unexcused absence. All letters of notification must be submitted at least one week before the designated rehearsal or performance to be considered. A student may only earn 1/2 of the points possible – 50/100
A student may not participate in music performances/activities unless the student attends the last four periods of that school day. Students absent all day, due to illness may NOT attend a music performance/activity that day or evening. If extenuating school or family circumstances result in a student’s failed to be present the required four periods, an exception can be made. Reasons may include: HSE approved college visit, HSE field trips, religious observance, medical emergency, or funeral. These exceptions must be approved by the HSE choral directors.
